Also...Trevor will be WORKING OUT for the Saints tomorrow in Minnesota. They scheduled a late workout with him, which is almost unheard of at this point in the process. This is definitely a positive sign for Trevor. New Orleans have the 40th pick in the draft, which would be an early 2nd round selection for Trev. Great news!!!! The only negative here is that Trevor has been sick with pneumonia this past week, so his lungs aren't in the best shape for this kind of workout. He's sucked it up though and been in the gym getting ready for the workout. We'll let you know how it goes for sure.

Watching Saturday’s practice was sure a treat for anyone who likes football. Pads popping, the exuberance, the fights, the big plays, the challenges….all the sights and sounds that make football great. But as excited as one would be watching the Irish offense come to life on Saturday, I kept thinking one thing. How will the Irish replace Trevor Laws?

When you think of it, the numbers are just mind-blowing.

Think about that for a minute.

shman Ian Williams was the next closest D-lineman to Trevor Laws in tackles in 2007 with 45, and he didn’t even start most games. The next guy on the stat sheet at D-line? Pat Kuntz (42), and he’s not even enrolled at Notre Dame currently. The next guy? Justin Brown (30), who played in all 12 games and started five, logged just 30 tackles? Guess who was next in total tackles on the team? Ambrose Wooden at 27…..a part-time starter at defensive back who was not always known for physical play.

It’s not just the tackles that will be tough to replace, it’s the attitude Laws brought to the team. His effort was contagio

us to an often out-manned defense just trying to fight, crawl, scratch and survive the numerous explosive offenses Notre Dame faced last season.

Watching the Irish offense run the ball against the Notre Dame front on Saturday was just another reminder that the Irish still have a big hole to fill to replace Laws. Even with Laws the Irish surrendered an eye-popping 195 yards rushing per game. So how can the Irish coaching staff replace such a disruptive force in Trevor Laws?

“What has to happen is the other guys have to play at a higher level to make up for one guy,” said Irish defensive coordinator Corwin Brown when asked that question after Monday’s practice. “You have to get higher play from the nose, the tackle, the end…..the secondary has to play at a higher level.

“We relied on Trevor so much. It was almost like we just played to his strength because he was our biggest playmaker on defense. What we did was kind of allowed him to do things, where now we’ll need more plays from a larger number of guys. That’s how you do that. Everybody else picks up their game. Coaches pick up our game, then we’ll be better.”

Irish defensive line coach Jappy Oliver agreed with Brown.

“You don’t,” Oliver said when asked the same question about replacing Laws. “You just convince the guys that ‘it’s your time now. It’s your time.’ It’s time to step up, take the bull by the horns and kind of go with it, and just keep pushing because the past is the past.”

The past is the past, but so far the Irish don’t appear to have anyone in the future with the ability and productivity of Laws currently practicing this spring.

“You see Ian (Williams) playing well,” Brown said when asked if anyone is stepping up as he suggested. “You kind of see flashes from Emeka (Nwankwo) and some of those guys, (Morrice) Richardson, and guys like that do well. Honestly, some of those guys didn’t make those plays last year. Morrice didn’t play with the motor he’s playing with now. That’s a plus. That’s a positive. You hope it becomes infectious and a lot of guys will start doing it.”

Oliver also stated Williams has shown at times that he’s a force to be reckoned with inside.

“From the technical standpoint, he’s steady,” Oliver said of Williams. “He’s being consistent. But I’d like to see Ian playing with more passion. What happens is if you have some success, now the onus is on you and you can turn it loose more. You can show that passion and hopefully everyone else sees that, because we don’t have enough of that right now.”

Kuntz does play with effort and passion, but as mentioned earlier, he’s not practicing with the Irish this spring, and the Irish don’t have a lot of other candidates at defensive end to replace him. One player who has shown some promise thus far is sophomore Emeka Nwankwo. Nwankwo mentioned to us in an earlier story published on Irish Eyes that he learned a lot about intensity from watching Laws from the sidelines last year.

“I hope so. I hope he’s listening to what he’s saying,” Oliver said of Nwankwo. “Unless you’re going to do it, there’s no reason to talk about it. Hopefully they’ve been watching, and now, when I say it’s your time, all those things you talked about seeing Trevor do, okay, let’s go. It’s time for you to do it.

“He’s done some good things,” said Oliver of Nwankwoo. “I’ve noticed like when we go out to Irish Eyes, initially he was jumping around blocks, now I see him being a little more patient and still shedding, just being more consistent, which is my theme song to all of them, being more consistent. I don’t want to see flashes. I’m seeing too much of that….flashes here and flashes there. I’d like see some consistent play because those are the ones we count on.”

One player that the Irish need to step up at defensive end is senior Justin Brown. Brown certainly has the athletic ability to be a solid performer, and did have record 3.5 tackles for loss and a sack last season, but both coaches suggested he still has a ways to go when it comes to upping the intensity on the field.

“I don’t know if there’s a level where I’m looking for him to reach, but the thing I’d like for Justin, and all of our older guys to do, is to play 100 miles an hour,” Corwin Brown said. “Going hard as they can, with a good motor….that’s what we want to see with everybody, but particular our older guys.”

“Flashes, not enough…..nowhere near enough,” Oliver said of Justin Brown. “I’m being totally honest when I say that, because I don’t tell you anything I don’t tell them.”

The Irish do have some talented freshmen reporting this summer who may be able to help, and many believe Kuntz will also be back this summer, and that would definitely help. But the one weakness on this defense continues to be figuring out how to replace the production of Laws last fall. Like I said, even with Laws, this unit struggled against the run. All the Irish defenders will have to up their game to replace Laws, and it doesn’t sound like that is currently happening at this point.

Trevor inks deal with Under Armour

We are excited to announce that Trevor Laws is the newest member of the Under Armour family. The deal was in the works since the Senior Bowl, and was finalized this week. Trevor is totally pumped about signing with UA. They have a family atmosphere that fits Trevor perfectly. We here at Trevor-Laws.com are STOKED about the signing.

Under Armour has signed three former Notre Dame players now, including Tommy Zbikowski, Jeff Samardzija and now, Trevor Laws. Another thing that makes this unique is that all three of the guys are best friends and talk to each other almost daily. That furthers that family atmosphere and is another reason Trevor is excited about this signing.

Pro Day Resuls

The Notre Dame Pro Day was yesterday, and all the ND guys killed it. Everyone from Trevor to Dwight Stephenson had good days. Definitely happy for all the guys.

"No, but because I know a lot of these guys they'll tell me where they have them - which I'm not at liberty to say _ and I'll tell them, either, 'That's where I see him,' or, 'I think he's better than that.' Like Trevor Laws, somebody might say 'I see him in the third round.' And I'll say, 'Maybe that's where he was, but that's not where he is now.' I'll say it's past tense."
"But a guy like Laws, where the arrow is pointing up, his stock goes up every single day and he doesn't have to do anything. Because everyone else has holes in them and he doesn't have any holes in him other than he's not 6-4. If he was 6-4, he might be the first player taken in the draft based on how he played."

With the draft right around the corner, there are a ton of mock drafts and fan websites analyzing the draft. There were a couple that highlighted Trevor as a potential draft pick for their respective team. I've included a couple of them below.

The Notre Dame pro day is tomorrow!!! We will provide an update soon afterwards to let you know how Trevor did, and possibly what teams were talking with him. It's the last big event for Trevor prior to the draft, so it should be an exciting day for him, as well as the other ND players hoping to impress NFL scouts and coaches.

Still in the process of getting some t-shirts made with the new official Trevor Laws logo. Look for news on that relatively soon.

We are proud to announce the new logo for www.Trevor-Laws.com. This logo was created by a variety of people, but mostly Trevor's cousin Markus, Trevor's brother Drew and his Mom. This logo will be used on the site, in any print from the website, as well as t-shirts and other media that may be created distributed on the website.

There are actually 2 logos, and both will be used in different situations. Look for new products using these logos coming out soon! First on the list is a t-shirt utilizing the logos, so be prepared for that!

For the record, the 3 W stands for Will. Work. Win...kind of Trevor's motto in everything he does, and he definitely applied those one the field throughout his career at Notre Dame.

Wanted to give everyone some updates on Trevor and some articles that are floating around out there.

Small piece from the Chicago Tribune about Trevor and Under Armour:

Under Armour has been so impressed with Notre Dame's Trevor Laws -- a combine participant -- that it wants to include the defensive lineman in its ad campaigns. The company already has two of Laws' former Irish teammates in Tom Zbikowski and Jeff Samardzija.

Also, Trevor is currently listed as Mike Mayock's #4 DT in the draft.

One final note, Trevor got the #5 "Play of the Day" on the NFL Network for today's combine drills for his 35 reps on the bench press. Nice work Trevor!!

Web Updates

Hey all-

Wanted to alert you to some recent articles out there on the net about Trevor, as well as an update on the site and why the look may have changed if you access us using Internet Explorer.

First off, for some reason the look of the pages have changed when using Internet Explorer (Windows) to access this website. The page is no longer transparent and you can't see the background image. This is because of the way IE handles certain image files, namely PNG images. Anyways, we are working on a fix and hopefully will have one shortly. In the meantime, hopefully you can still enjoy the site...or just go buy a Mac. :-)

Secondly, here are some good websites with up to date info on Trevor:

Draft Scout - Good info that currently has Trevor ranked 5th among DTs, and 58th overall. Periodically updated with good info.

Senior Bowl Love

A good article about the top "players on the rise" at the Senior Bowl appeared on SI.com. Here is the link: Players on the Rise. You'll notice Trevor is on the list! Congrats!

Also, here is the video where they talk about Trev and how well he played on Wednesday. They actually highlight him before the play and what not. Very cool. NFL Video.

Here is a Senior Bowl practice report from Scout.com:

It was Trevor Laws day. He was in on every play taking place during the scrimmage period. He works real well down the line of scrimmage, which is what gives him so many tackles. He just keeps working and runs down the ball carrier often. I did notice that we works better against the taller guards for some reason. It could be that he is able to stay flat and just peel off the block while beating the blocker to the point of attack. Trevor got plenty attention after practice by the media and other coaches. Raider’s defensive line coach Keith Millard had these comments after practice.

“He’s doing great. You know going into this deal; you try to find out as much about the players as you can and we heard that he was kind of a 3-4 defensive end, but when you think of a defensive end you think about a 270-275 pound guy. Then we heard he was 303 pounds and I was like 303 pounds playing defensive end; that doesn’t make sense. So when I spoke to him he said it was based on the personnel they had, but I asked him if he wanted to play inside at the Senior Bowl. I mean you got a body for it. It would be good for the scouts to see it. He is one of our best guys. He’s doing a great job. Good footwork. Good body control. A lot of intensity. A couple of things he is going to get better at as he works everyday. I’m proud of him.”

John Sullivan is getting better with each practice. He does a better job than any of the other linemen in getting to the second tier to take on the backers. His pass protection was equally as good by keeping all of the north quarterbacks upright the entire day.

Updates

Lots of updates this week to the website. Check back often!!!

Trevor has been doing a blog every night to chronicle his days (and nights) at the Senior Bowl. It's pretty interesting and should provide some insight into what actually happens there, and what teams he's meeting with and what not. Check it out often.

Added a couple new pictures to the store, and actually removed one. Once we got one of the pictures we had chosen blown up, it wasn't super sharp. So we went with some other ones instead.
